Project Runway Season 5 Episode 6 By: Amy Vedder |
| |
I have to admit that I was really looking forward to this week’s episode of Project Runway, if for nothing more than the chance to see Chris March again. And there he was in all his drag queen glory. Chris wasn’t the guest judge, that honor was reserved for the famous RuPaul, but Chris was a big part of the challenge. He not only explained the challenge to the designers, but he also acted as second mentor to the designers, with Tim Gunn.
This week, the designers had to create a look for drag queens and honestly I was surprised that the designs were so normal. I was really expecting some way over the top looks to be coming down the runway. But alas, again we saw this group of designer’s way more concerned about losing than they were about winning.
Ironically, the first thing I said to myself was Joe, being the only straight guy in the bunch, was definitely going to have a problem with this challenge, and low and behold, Joe ended up winning with his sailing outfit. Go figure. But I was happy to be wrong because Joe really did do a fabulous job bringing out the personality of his queen.
The loser this week was Daniel, and all I have to say is, it’s about time. Daniel hasn’t done anything worth mentioning since week one, when he created a cocktail dress from plastic cups. This week he produced another cocktail dress, and although it was pretty, it really didn’t have anything to do with the challenge, which was to create a look for a drag queen, based on the queen’s personality.
Normally, these costumey challenges aren’t my favorite, they just don’t seem like they have anything to do with fashion, and I have a hard time imagining a professional like Michael Kors, taking on a client who would want something like this, so for me it begs the question, what is the point?
But for this particular challenge, it was Chris March that made all the difference. Somehow, Chris made it all okay, and turned the challenge from a costume challenge into something that was for real people, who just happen to want to dress in the most over the top way as possible.
All and all, it was another great episode, filled with fun and laughs. And that leaves us with six designers gone and ten to go. What will happen next week I have no idea, but I’m already looking forward to it.
