Proper Gym Etiquette: Turn That Phone Off!

Proper Gym Etiquette: Turn That Phone Off!Picture the scene, you’re at the gym, you’re working extra hard because you really want to try and drop those last few pounds that have been haunting you. You’re at the bench press pushing out a few extra reps and suddenly you hear the phone ring followed by a loud “hello.”

The person at the machine next to you not only has their cell phone with them, but they continue having a long drawn out conversation about what they are getting from the store later and what they might like for dinner.

At first you try to ignore it, but the longer the conversation goes on, the more you feel distracted and disconnected from your exercise time. Surprise, that’s not a fairy tale, it’s a real story that really happened to a coworker of mine the last time she visited her gym.

Her story made me realize that it was time to talk about proper gym etiquette and the right and wrong behavior in the gym.

• Cell phones: obviously, as the above story suggests, cell phones should not be taken into the gym. Turn the phone off and keep it in your locker or in the car while you workout. If you are expecting some very important call, then keep your ringer as low as possible and leave the gym the moment you receive your call. No one wants the distraction of hearing your custom ring tone or having to listen to your conversations.

• Gym equipment and your sweat: unbelievably, there are still a lot of people who don’t seem to know that they are to wipe off gym equipment after they use it. Let’s face it; no one wants to jump onto a piece of gym equipment that is filled with your sweat. When you are done using a piece of equipment, be sure to wipe it down so that the next person doesn’t have to deal with what you leave behind.

• Share the equipment. You may be focusing on a specific exercise or piece of equipment to work a specific part of your body. That alone doesn’t give you the right to hog a particular piece of equipment. Be sure your not monopolizing equipment so that others can’t use it. Make sure you make the equipment available during your rest periods and don’t hog one particular piece of equipment.

• Reset equipment for normal use. You may be very strong, bench pressing 400 lbs. but most people aren’t. Be sure to reset equipment for normal use after you are done so the next person doesn’t have to reset the equipment before they can use it. This is particularly true when it comes to free weights.

By taking a few extra steps and making sure not to be disruptive, you can make the gym a friendlier, easier place to use. When everybody does their part, everything goes just as it should. The gym is a tool, use it right.
