College Road Trip By Richard W. Kozak, Jr. |
| |
Disney’s effort of “College Road Trip” begs to ask many questions?
Does Martin Lawrence have financial troubles so great he must continue to crank out these films that are remarkably similar on an annual basis?
Is he forgoing his own persona to become the closest to a minority Adam Sandler as possible? Who would have thought that one actor could take mugging to such an artistic level?
Exactly how old is the Disney Oprah Raven-Symone anyway? She’s plays another teenager after portraying a toddler over 20 years ago, is someone suffering from post-Disney identity crisis? Watch out Ashley Tisdale!
Finally, didn’t anyone before this ever realize that Donny Osmond was this funny, and I mean really funny?
In “College Road Trip”, Lawrence reprises his role, or should I say reinvents his role as an over protective father. This time his obsession is his daughter Melanie (Symone) and her need to grow up and take the next step in her life. She’s off to college, but first to allay his own fears, dad must escort her to a college visit.
What happens next is utterly predictable. Everyone piles in the car for the “unpredictable” slap happy, slapstick road trip, where the antics are out of this world. Not quite. We’ve seen it all a thousand times before, but only better.
For those under 12 years old (aka the built in Disney Channel audience) they’ll love the slapstick nature and another adventure of Raven. How good is Disney marketing you ask? When we opened the bag of DVD’s from our local rental establishment, my 2 year old daughter with eyes wide grabs the jewel box and exclaims, “Road Trip!” Some scientist really has to look into Disney ads.
“College Road Trip” is a movie kids will love and parent won’t hate. Unflinchingly mediocre, “CRT” earns a 4 out of 5 car seats for the kids and 2 ½ textbooks for adults.
