Inspired Perspectives: Contemporary Works in Fiber

Inspired Perspectives: Contemporary Works in FiberInspired Perspectives: Contemporary Works in Fiber, featuring the work of Akron’s Contemporary Fiber Arts group, comes to an end July 20th, 2008.

Contemporary Fiber Artists (CFA) is composed of twelve working artists who come from many walks of life - business, financial analysts, homemakers, social workers, librarians, educators from all levels of education, school administrators, interior designers, students, men as well as women, singles as well as parents, young and not-so-young.

CFA was started in 1994 and was originally named Kindred Spirits. The name was later changed to more adequately reflect the talents of the members of the group. Originally the focus of this group was in traditional quilting, but as its membership changed, the areas of concentration also changed to more diverse media in the fiber arts. Work now being accomplished by the members includes not only traditional quilts, but also more modem art quilts, representational and nonrepresentational work using such media as quilting, hand painting and dying of all sorts of fibers, machine and hand embroidery, bead work, jewelry, work with metals, plastics, wood, glass, and other materials, all from the imagination of the artists.

The membership is maintained at twelve to enable meeting in one another's homes where meetings are held twice per month. One is a general meeting where members share the current events of their lives and do the business of the group, while the second meeting focuses on new work which may be presented and which receives constructive critique from the members.

The intent of CFA is for continued and varying dialogue in the arts, support and critique of one another's work and the encouragement of artistic development, new approaches, opportunities and perspectives are sought and encouraged. Occasionally, some members of the group involve themselves in series of self-challenges. Themes for these randomly selected challenges have, in the past, included Icons, Passages and Nature. There are few rules in the development of these challenges except for a definite time frame in which to accomplish the projects.

CFA members exhibit together as a group and independently in local, regional and national exhibits and juried shows. A listing of the group exhibits is attached. Many of the CFA members are also members of other fiber, art and quilt organizations.

Though diverse, the twelve artists of CFA complement one another. Fiber art is the uniting factor, while individuality in process, media and thought is the diversity.
