Getting older? Get exercising!

getting olderThere’s no doubt about it, the older you get the harder it is to keep in shape and exercise regularly. When we were young, keeping in shape was easy. We were so active in our day to day lives we didn’t think about exercise or how to keep ourselves healthy. But as we age, and spend more time working our jobs and living more and more sedentary lives, keeping in shape and exercise can be more than just a challenge to fit into the schedule, it can be impossible because, when all is said and done, we’re already exhausted.

But just because we may not feel like exercising doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t. Even if you work a lot of hours, and no matter how busy your schedule is, or how tired you are, you can still squeeze in some physical activity to get healthy and feel great.

As always, if you have an existing medical condition or if you have been sedentary for a long time, be sure to check with your doctor before you start any exercise routine. But if you’re looking to get fit, consider the following activity to get you going and back on the road to health and fitness:
  • Walking. No matter who you talk to, everybody agrees, walking is one of the best ways to get back into the exercise routine. The best way to start is to walk a comfortable distance and then to walk a little further each day. Before you know it you’ll be walking miles, and feeling the difference that the activity brings.
  • Biking. Maybe you haven’t got on a bicycle since you were a kid. No worry, bike riding is one of those things you never forget how to do. Even better, consider an indoor stationary bike. These bikes have come a long way, since they were first introduced. Now you can get one that not only works the legs but the arms as well. Five miles a day on an indoor bicycle will do wonders, especially for those of us who are starting to feel our muscles tighten up.
  • Low impact exercises. Don’t underestimate the importance of even low impact exercises. Just start slow and work your way up to harder exercises and larger rep counts. Any effort pays off, and before you know it, you’ll feel the difference.

The older you get the harder it is to start new habits and to break old ones. You want to push yourself but don’t worry about pushing yourself too hard. If everyday, you add a few more minutes to your walk, another 1/10 mile to your ride or just a few extra leg lifts, you’ll be on the right path to good health. Do what you can do, but just get doing it. The sooner you start the sooner you’ll reach your fitness goal.
