Getting thin on top

ontop2Hair loss or alopecia affects millions of people around the world. Although there are several forms of alopecia, this article focuses on androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern baldness.

Male pattern baldness is instantly recognizable. The hair begins to fall out at the top of the head, continuing to the edge of the top of the head and is usually accompanied by a fairly extreme comb over. As its name suggests, androgenetic alopecia is a hereditary or genetic predisposition.

Women are not excluded from this condition. Some women experience the same problem, although it is usually not as sever and rarely takes place before the onset of menopause.

Although considered a genetic disposition, there are several other factors that can combine to cause this type of hair loss. Medical conditions such as a serious prolonged illness, radiation exposure, thyroid disease, diabetes, stress, and vitamin deficiency can all cause hair loss.

If you find your hair is falling out, here are some things you can try to keep as much on top as you can.

Vitamins: Try adding B complex, vitamin C and Vitamin E to your diet. Honestly these vitamins should be added to everyone’s diet but particularly so if you are experiencing hair loss, also Biotin which is part of the B vitamin family. Most B complex supplements contain Biotin, but you may want to take additional Biotin supplements because of the linking between Biotin deficiencies and hair loss.

Herbs: You may also want to try products like horsetail which contain silica, a product which promotes strong, healthy hair.

Other things to try: Let some blood get to your head. You may want to try laying head down so that blood can reach the scalp. You may also want to try massaging your scalp on a daily basis. Also be nice to your hair. Don’t be rough combing your hair and don’t use a hot blow dryer on your hair. Let your hair air dry and do not comb it until it is dry. Wet hair can break off in the combing process.

Regardless of what stage of hair loss you are at, by making a few simple changes you just might be able to slow or possibly reverse the process, although in some cases there is nothing that can be done but to accept the beauty of being bald.
