Cavs Celebrate the Opening of the Newest Learn and Play Center!

To celebrate the grand opening of the newest Cavaliers Learn and Play Center, Cavs players Luke Harangody and Anthony Parker and Cavs Assistant Coach Chris Jent had the honor of cutting the ribbon at West Side Ecumenical Ministry (WSEM).  This is the 11th Learn and Play Center that the team has funded and constructed since 2003 and the first to focus on early childhood education. Presented by Quicken Loans in association with Sherwin Williams, the Center is a component of the Cavaliers Read to Achieve program, an outreach effort designed to help youth develop a lifelong love for reading and encourage adults to read regularly with children.

“We are so proud to have a franchise and ownership team that are not only committed to sustained success on the court, but also in our community,” said Cavaliers and Quicken Loans Arena President Len Komoroski. “Dan Gilbert’s family of companies, including the Cavs, Quicken Loans and Fathead have come together to help these children have a better opportunity to get a jumpstart as they begin their educational journey. West Side Ecumenical Ministry is in our own backyard and we are pleased to partner with them because of all the wonderful work they are doing with children and families in the Cleveland area.”

After a brief press conference and a ceremonial ribbon cutting, the children and guests were free to explore the new space, completely renovated with computers donated by Quicken Loans, a 42” flat screen television, and a vast assortment of games, educational DVDs and more than 600 books. Decorated in Cavaliers team colors and custom Fathead wall graphics, the Center was also furnished with new desks, chairs, bookshelves and a dry-erase wall.

“Supporting WESM is a vital part of Quicken Loans’ goal to strengthen Cleveland’s downtown and surrounding communities," said Quicken Loans Director, Community Relations Wendy Kemp. "This new learn and play center is Engineered to Amaze and that is what Quicken Loans is all about, doing projects that Amaze and giving children the tools they need to succeed.”

The Cavs Learn and Play Center will serve families and children (ages 0-5) to help them develop school readiness skills, encourage a love of learning and grow toward their physical, emotional, social and intellectual potential.  All seven of WSEM’s federally-funded Head Start sites across Greater Cleveland will have access to the L&PC at the Detroit Road location.

WSEM is a non-profit human service agency that provides real help, real hope and real futures to more than 48,000 children, youth and adults in need on Cleveland's West Side. They help those they serve move toward self-sufficiency by providing access to high quality educational, economic and social and support opportunities.

Read to Achieve, presented by Time Warner Cable in association with Outback Steakhouse and Castaway Bay, is a year-round campaign designed to help young people develop a life-long love for reading and encourage adults to read regularly with children. The program reaches thousands of elementary, middle and high school students in Northeast Ohio through reading time-outs, book drives and donations and the construction of Reading & Learning Centers.
